For the Pulled Pork:

  • 4-5 pounds pork shoulder or pork butt
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup chicken broth or apple cider

For the Sandwiches:

  • Hamburger buns or sandwich rolls
  • Coleslaw (optional, for topping)
  • Barbecue sauce (optional, for serving)

  1. Prepare the Pork:
    • In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to create a dry rub.
    • Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it’s evenly coated. Let it sit and marinate for at least 30 minutes or refrigerate overnight for maximum flavor.
  2. Cooking the Pork:
    • Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
    • Place the seasoned pork in a roasting pan or Dutch oven. Pour the chicken broth or apple cider around the pork.
    • Cover the pan with a lid or foil and roast in the preheated oven for approximately 6-7 hours until the pork is very tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  3. Shred the Pork:
    • Once the pork is tender, remove it from the oven. Using two forks, shred the meat directly in the roasting pan, allowing it to soak up the cooking juices.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches:
    • Toast the hamburger buns or sandwich rolls.
    • Place a generous amount of pulled pork on the bottom half of each bun.
    • Top with coleslaw for a crunchy contrast and drizzle with barbecue sauce, if desired.
    • Cover with the top half of the bun and serv
    • You can use a slow cooker instead of the oven for cooking the pork. Cook on low for 8-10 hours or until the pork is tender.
  • Feel free to adjust the seasonings or add more spices to the dry rub to suit your taste preferences.
