How to make Corn Dogs

Making corn dogs is a straightforward process. Here’s a basic recipe to guide you through the steps:

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying
  • 16 hot dogs
  • 16 wooden skewers or popsicle sticks

  1. Prepare the batter: In a mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, sugar, and baking powder. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then stir in the milk. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  2. Prep the hot dogs: Dry the hot dogs with paper towels. Insert a wooden skewer or popsicle stick into each hot dog. This will be the handle for your corn dog.
  3. Heat the oil: In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to around 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer to ensure accurate temperature.
  4. Coat the hot dogs: Dip each hot dog on a stick into the batter, making sure to coat it entirely. Rotate and swirl the hot dog to allow any excess batter to drip off.
  5. Fry the corn dogs: Carefully place the coated hot dogs into the hot oil. You may need to work in batches to avoid overcrowding the fryer, which can lower the oil temperature. Fry the corn dogs for about 3-4 minutes or until they turn golden brown. Turn them occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  6. Remove and drain: Using tongs, take the corn dogs out of the oil and place them on paper towels or a wire rack to drain any excess oil.
  7. Serve: Once they’ve drained and cooled slightly, serve your homemade corn dogs with mustard, ketchup, or any other preferred condiments.

Remember to be cautious while frying to prevent oil splatters or burns. Enjoy your homemade corn dogs!
