How to make prawn curry

Making prawn curry is a delightful and flavorful dish that can be enjoyed with rice, naan, or other bread. Here’s a simple recipe to make a delicious prawn curry:

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams of prawns, peeled and deveined
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, pureed or finely chopped
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit lengthwise (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk (optional, for a creamier curry)
  • 1/2 cup water (adjust for desired consistency)
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Clean the prawns: Rinse the prawns under cold running water and remove the shells and veins. You can keep the tails on for a more attractive presentation if desired.
  2. Prepare the masala: In a deep pan or kadai, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and let them splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent and golden brown.
  4. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and green chilies. Sauté for another minute or until the raw smell disappears.
  5. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix the spices well with the onion mixture and let it cook for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Add the pureed or chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften and release their juices.
  7. Time to add the prawns: Stir in the prawns and coat them well with the masala mixture. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the prawns start turning pink and slightly firm.
  8. If using coconut milk, add it now and stir to combine with the rest of the ingredients.
  9. Pour in the water, mix everything, and let it simmer on low heat for 5-7 minutes until the prawns are fully cooked and the curry reaches the desired consistency.
  10. Sprinkle garam masala over the curry and give it a final stir.
  11. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

Your delicious prawn curry is now ready to be served! Enjoy it with steamed rice, naan, or any bread of your choice.

Note: Feel free to adjust the spices and chili according to your taste preference. If you like it spicier, add more chili powder or green chilies. Additionally, you can add other vegetables like bell peppers or potatoes to make it more diverse.
