For the Cake:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the Cake:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
    • In a bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. Prepare Wet Ingredients:
    • In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add the vegetable oil, buttermilk, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar. Mix until well combined.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  5. Bake the Cake:
    • Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.
    • Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

  1. Prepare Frosting:
    • In a large bowl, cream together the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth.
    • Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract. Beat until the frosting is smooth and creamy.

  1. Frost the Cake:
    • Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting on top.
    • Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
  2. Decorate (Optional):
    • If desired, decorate the cake with cake crumbs, red velvet crumbs, or any additional decorations.

Notes:

  • If you prefer a more pronounced cocoa flavor, you can increase the amount of cocoa powder slightly.
  • You can adjust the intensity of the red color by adding more or less food coloring.

Enjoy your homemade Red Velvet Cake, a classic and indulgent dessert that’s perfect for special occasions and celebrations!
