How to make Texas Chili

Texas chili is a beloved dish known for its robust flavors and hearty texture. Here’s a traditional recipe for making Texas-style chili:

  • 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into small cubes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste for spiciness)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional garnishes: Shredded cheese, chopped onions, sour cream, chopped cilantro, lime wedges

  1. Brown the Beef:
    • In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the beef cubes and brown them on all sides. Remove the beef and set it aside.
  2. Sauté Onion and Garlic:
    • In the same pot, add the chopped onion and cook until it’s translucent. Add the minced garlic and sauté for a minute.
  3. Season and Add Spices:
    • Stir in the chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, and cayenne pepper. Cook the spices with the onion and garlic for a minute or until fragrant.
  4. Simmer the Chili:
    • Return the browned beef to the pot. Pour in the beef broth, crushed tomatoes, and tomato paste. Season with salt and pepper. Stir well to combine.
    • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the more the flavors will develop.
  5. Adjust Seasoning and Serve:
    • Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. If it’s too thick, you can add a little more beef broth or water.
    • Serve the Texas chili hot, garnished with shredded cheese, chopped onions, sour cream, chopped cilantro, or a squeeze of fresh lime juice, as desired.

  • Texas-style chili typically doesn’t contain beans, but you can add kidney beans or pinto beans if you prefer.
  • Adjust the spiciness by increasing or decreasing the amount of cayenne pepper or adding diced jalapeños.
